The Palomá Family Student Athlete Excellence Award recognizes a current Tampa Catholic junior exhibiting dedication to excellence and leadership within the scope of academics and athletics. The award will be conferred to one female junior and one male junior student athlete at Tampa Catholic High School each May. The selected students will each receive $1,000 towards their Tampa Catholic tuition for their senior year.
Tampa Catholic alumnus Dr. Alexander Palomá ’94 has a strong dedication to achievement and learning that began at Tampa Catholic. While a TC student he credits the teachers, coaches, and counselors for finding and nourishing his hidden potential and cultivating and creating a curiosity for life long learning.
After graduating from Tampa Catholic, he attended the University of South Florida receiving a bachelors degree in biology. Continuing onto the USF College of Medicine, he found a special interest in critical care medicine and peri-operative care and then chose a residency in anesthesiology, and was honored as Chief Resident. After completing a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Northwestern University in Chicago, he returned to Tampa where he is currently serving as Clinical Director of Anesthesia at St. Joseph’s South Hospital.
Together, Alexander and his wife, Tampa native and lawyer Luana Martucci de Palomá, are a strong presence in local philanthropy. Luana has raised over $190,000 for pediatric cancer prevention research through her foundation, the Lawrence A. Martucci Benefit Corporation.
Together, to honor and show their appreciation for the guidance and vision of the faculty and staff at Tampa Catholic High School, they have established the Palomá Family Student Athlete Excellence Award. This award encourages well rounded students to find their own dedication to achievement based in the Tampa Catholic ideals of Veritas et Caritas - truth and charity.
