Jan 26 Tampa Catholic High School is proud to announce that Girls’ Flag Football will become an independent girls’ sports team this spring and will join a district the following school year; able to compete for state championships. Flag football is a recognized sport for girls in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA). It is a version of American football where the basic rules of the game are similar to those of the mainstream game. In flag football, the game is played with seven players on offense and seven players on defense on an eighty-yard field. Instead of tackling players to the ground, the defensive team must remove a flag or flag belt from the ball carrier to end a down. Contact is not permitted between players and a penalty will be assessed on the team that initiates it. Seniors Riley Del Giudice, Alessandra Naso, and Mary-Shelton Pappas were instrumental in bringing flag football to Tampa Catholic. The three seniors approached Mr. Scott Montgomery, Mathematics teacher, about starting a program and becoming the coach. Tryouts will begin February 12, 2018 and all grade levels are welcome.
