Following the Mass celebrating the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice, the founder of the Christian Brothers, Tampa Catholic Principal Robert C. Lees announced the 2019 Neary Scholarship recipient.
In the spirit of Blessed Edmund Rice whose mission for the congregation can best be seen through the generations of youth who have “come to know God through their Catholic faith” and have received “an education that has enabled them to rise to fulfill their greatest promise”, the Patrick and Mary Neary Endowed Scholarship Fund ensures the gift of a Catholic education.
Last year a permanently endowed scholarship was set up in the name of Patrick and Mary Neary. This award is named in gratitude by an anonymous donor who always remembers the self-less Catholic charity embodied by Patrick and Mary Neary, a family who did a good turn for a young man many years ago.
This major fund, of which only the interest is used, was established making the scholarship available in perpetuity to students at Tampa Catholic. It was the largest single gift given by an individual family in the history of TC.
The Neary family acted with Christian charity and love. Now that act of kindness is being paid forward in their name in the true spirit of Blessed Edmund Rice.
This year’s recipient is an 8thgrade student at St. Stephen’s in Riverview. She was nominated by her Principal, Mrs. Linda Umoh and as part of the application process she wrote of the challenges she experienced in her native Venezuela and how her faith carried her through those dark days. She also spoke of her love and desire to serve others out of gratitude for her being delivered from a life of oppression and suffering, even though it meant leaving behind family members and friends in her native country.
We are proud to welcome Maria Castillo into the TC class of 2023. She will be receiving a 4-year scholarship award as the 2019 recipient of the Patrick and Mary Neary Endowed Scholarship.
