Student-Athletes of the Month and Sports Updates

student athletes

One of the nice things I get to do as the athletic director is to present awards each month to a couple of our outstanding student/athletes.  On Thursday morning I presented awards to 2 of our golfers who were fantastic in October.  Sophomore Dylan Sanchez qualified for the state golf tournament last month and senior Lindsey Gonzalez has set the bar very high for our girls’ golf team as she qualified for regionals and just missed out on the state tourney.  We are proud of both of these athletes who also have 3.4 and 3.7 gpa’s respectively.  Not only have they been outstanding on the golf course but also in the classroom.  Congratulations to both Dylan and Lindsey.

Tonight here at Crusader Field our Crusaders take on Berkeley Prep in State playoff action.  The game tonight is a state regional final game with the winner advancing to the state semi-finals next Friday.  Needless to say it’s big game and we need everyone out there tonight supporting our team.  Game time is 7:00.

Our boys’ basketball team play in a tip-off classic this week at St. Pete High.  The team played last night against Lakewood and play Sat. night against the host team St. Pete High.  MaxPreps, a national prep internet publication has the Crusaders ranked as the #2 team in the state regardless of classification.  The team will open their regular season at home on Nov. 30 against defending 3A state champion Windermere Prep.  Come out and see this highly ranked team.

Our girls team opened their season on Tuesday with a win at Wiregrass Ranch 68-57.  The team played last night and their game for tonight has been moved to Jan. 25.

Our boys’ soccer team played last night at CCC.  This young team has lost its first 3 games but is showing much improvement.

The girls’ soccer team also played last night at CCC.  The team has a 4-1 record and is playing at a high level.

Our crew team travels to Turkey Lake tomorrow for the Head of the Giblet Regatta.  Races start at 8:00 tomorrow morning.

As we head into Thanksgiving week I want to thank all of our athletes, coaches, parents, and fans for the great support that you have displayed.  I am thankful for being the Athletic Director at such a great school.  As I tell people many times over a school is not the buildings and playing areas, it’s the students, teachers, administrators, parents, and alumni that make a school what it truly is.  That’s not to say that we don’t want the very best in facilities, but we are very thankful for all the great people who consider Tampa Catholic home.  It’s all of you that have made and continue to make Tampa Catholic great.  Thank you and have a great Thanksgiving.
