Throughout the school year the athletic department takes nominations from the coaches for student/athletes of the month. Each month one female and one male student/athlete is selected. They receive a nice certificate at a ceremony that is videoed and shown to the entire student body during homeroom. The winners each month are from many different sports and have earned the award through many different means. Some of our winners have had outstanding performances, some have displayed great leadership or community service, some have been great teammates, and all have done the job in the classroom. The winners have displayed what we hope all of our athletes have and that is being a champion on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.
For the month of August are two winners were Luke Osterberger and Christin Rockway. Our male winner, Luke is on our cross-country team. He was our highest place finisher in the prestigious Jim Ryun Invitational held in Lakeland. Luke has been an inspiration to his fellow cross-country runners. He is a junior with a 3.61 GPA. Our female winner was swimmer Christin Rockway. I’m sure you have read about her before in this blog but it’s worth mentioning again that during August she represented the United States in the World U18 Swimming Championships held in Indianapolis. In the 400IM Christin finished 6th in the world. Christin is a senior with a 3.93 GPA and has accepted a scholarship to attend Indiana University next year. It should be noted that both of these athletes are early risers as Luke is running with our cross-country team at their workouts at 6:00AM and Christin is in the pool at 4:45. Hard work does pay off.
