Background
Lacrosse is the oldest indigenous sport in North America. It
was invented and first played by Native Americans as a preparation for war. A
game could go on for days, until the players’ exhaustion, or even their deaths,
forced it to end. The game was adopted by French-Canadian explorers, who named
it lacrosse because the stick resembled a Bishop’s crosier or cross. Today
lacrosse is played in various European countries, and has been played here in
the United Stated continuously since the 1880’s.
