Tampa Catholic High
School
Boys Lacrosse History
Lacrosse is the oldest
indigenous sport in North
America. It was invented
and first played by Native Americans as a preparation for war. A game could go
on for days, until the players’ exhaustion, or even their deaths, forced it to
end. The game was adopted by French-Canadian explorers, who named it lacrosse
because the stick resembled a Bishop’s crosier or cross. Today lacrosse is
played in various European countries, and has been played here in the United Stated
continuously since the 1880’s.
At Tampa Catholic our Crusader lacrosse legacy began in 2004. High school
lacrosse began in the West
Florida area around 1998
with 4 area teams that were barely able to scrape enough players together for
an official game. Our Crusader lacrosse program was started by player Ricky
Phelps and Coach Tim McGoff in 2004. In two seasons, we have had 5 players
named to the WFLL first team all stars and 6 players named to the second team
all stars. Along with a second place regular
season finish last year in the WFLL’s Eastern Division.
In 2006 we will continue the
growth by competing against other FHSAA sanctioned high school varsity teams in
Florida for the state championship.
TC Crusader lacrosse history is still being made on the field every week! Come
join the excitement!
