Boys & Girls Golf
Tampa Catholic Golf – Celebrating Our 42nd Season

Another Season in the Books
For those who like stats, we encourage you to look through the many pages we’ve compiled detailing the accomplishments of the 166 boys and 23 girls that have played on the TC golf teams.
School Records
Lorin Shulstad and Ryan Tamashiro each posted school records based on their performance at this year’s Regional Tournament.
The Crusader Cup was contested on December 4th. For only the 2nd time in the 12 year history of the event, the Varsity took the Cup. Read more by using the link at the left.
Next Season
TC will be in fine shape heading into next season. Eleven golfers will be returning including four of this year’s top five golfers.
Golf Team Continues to Putt for Kiva – Tops $1,000
Again this year, an anonymous individual is donated money for birdies and eagles holed at practice and matches. The $275 earned was added to our Kiva account and used to make loans to people in developing countries. We currently have $1,135 in the account and on loan. It is our practice to re-loan any money we receive in payment. You can read more about this unique program here.

Golf, Life, & Other Thoughts
In the fall the sport on the mind of most people is football. But in high school fall is also golf season. Mark Twain is said to have suggested that “golf is a good walk, spoiled”. And while every golfer has days when that sentiment is accurate, golf also teaches its practitioners important lessons in life. This may be most true for high school golfers.
Consider the circumstances under which a high school golf match is played. It is a team competition but each player must face the course alone and play every type of shot. The coach can’t substitute a player facing a difficult sand shot with the team “sand player” and when preparing to attempt an important short putt, no time out can be called to discuss strategy or technique.
There are no officials on the course during matches. The players must know the rules and how to apply them – neither of which is an especially easy task. By way of illustrating this last point, here’s a one question quiz: What additional options does a player get after hitting into a lateral (red) water hazard instead of a regular (yellow) water hazard? Click here for the answer.
Further, golf is the only sport where players are obligated to access penalties on themselves. It is nearly impossible to imagine a football defensive back calling pass interference on himself. Yet a golfer who, for instance, grounds his club in a sand trap must take a two stoke penalty whether anyone else sees the incident or not.
It is not hard to see the applications to life off the golf course. Scripture teaches us that those that are faithful in small things will be entrusted with larger responsibilities. In the context of life, a player calling a two shot penalty on himself in a golf match is a small matter but it speaks volumes about the character of that player.
High school golf does indeed teach life lessons. Honesty, integrity, character, perseverance, and patience are just a few things our TC students can learn through this sport. We wish them well in their golf and their future.
Team Makes Micro-Loans
Donation Earned for 2010: $275
Continuing a 6 year tradition an anonymous friend of the golf team pledged $10 for every birdie scored by the players in match play and $5 for every birdie scored at practice. In the past the individual has donated this money to a specific charity. (more about these donations beginning in the 2004 season) Three seasons ago our benefactor got the team started in making micro-loans to people in 3rd world countries and we’ve added to that account each year since.
Micro-loans and micro-credit is a financial innovation that is generally considered to have originated with Professor Muhammad Yunus who founded the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. Their goal was to provide banking services targeted to the rural poor- those unable to get credit from traditional banks. The success of Professor Yunus and the Bank was confirmed when the organization and its founder were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006.
Our donor set up an account with Kiva (www.kiva.org)** and deposited $500 – the amount “earned” by the team during the 2008 season. Another $360 was added to the account following the 2009 season and $275 in 2010. We continue to re-loan the money as it is repaid. Here’s our current stats:

Birdies for Charity
Donation for the 2010-2011 Season: $275.00
For the seventh consecutive season an anonymous individual is showing his support for Kiva and the TC Golf Teams by pledging to donate money to our Kivaaccount based on the number of birdies and eagles scored by the golfers. For the first four years the donation has gone to the Lance Armstrong Foundation. In the past 3 seasons the money has been sent to our Kiva account which the team uses to make micro-loans to people in developing countries. We encourage you to visit the Kiva website at http://www.kiva.org/.
Ten dollars is donated for every birdie scored by the players in match play and $5 for every birdie scored at practice. These amounts are doubled for eagles.
