Winter Sports Teams Advanced To State Tournament

We have had a lot of exciting things happen over the last several months during our winter sport seasons especially to two of our teams that advanced to the state tournament.

Boys Soccer: Our boys’ soccer team advanced all the way to the state championship game where they finally lost a heartbreaking game in Melbourne to Ransom

Everglades out of Miami.  The team had some unbelievable wins along the way and advanced further than any TC team in recent memory.  Head coach Kevin McCarron was awarded the Coach of the Year Award for his outstanding leadership.  Taylor Floyd was selected as the Player of the Year in the county.  Eric Wendell make 1st team all-county. Bryson Boylan, Justin Levine, and Anthony Vertino all were selected to the 2nd team and Luis Cueva, Anthony Enriquez, Jordan Enriquez, Austin Floyd, Kyle Magann, Alejandro Mendoza, and Michael Streeter were all selected Honorable Mention all-county.  It was a great season for our boys’ soccer team.

Boys Basketball: Our boys’ basketball team also advanced to the state tournament in Lakeland finishing with a 26-5 record.  We lost in the semifinals to the eventual Basketball_JMG_4805.JPGstate champion Jacksonville Bolles in the semifinal.  The team was awarded the ‘Team of the Year’ in Hillsborough County.  This is the 3rd time TC has won this prestigious award.  Kevin Knox was selected the Player of the Year as well as being named the 4A state Player of the Year.  Kevin is ranked as the top junior in Florida and the 6th best junior in the entire country.  Thomas Dziagwa was selected to the 1st team all-county and all-Tampa Bay area team and was the Alston ‘Mac’ McGahigan award winner as the top senior player in the county.  This award is given annually to a senior basketball player based on character, academics, team play, and attitude as well as ability.  It’s the first time that the award has been won by a Tampa Catholic student. Thomas has accepted a full basketball scholarship to Oklahoma State University and will leave TC as the career leader in points surpassing Gerald White this year and finishing with 2162 points, 7th all-time in the county.  Sophomore Tai Strickland as named Honorable Mention all-county.  As you can see both the basketball and soccer teams had great seasons.

SPRING SPORTS:

Baseball: Baseball has a big game tonight as the team travels to Jesuit to play the Tigers.  We lost earlier in the season 5-4 and the team plans on changing that outcome.

Softball: The softball team finished their regular season last night with a 9-8 loss to River Ridge.  Despite that loss the team has had a great season finishing with a 15-7-1 record which includes a 10-2 district record.  The team will play in the district tournament at Berkeley Prep starting on Monday.

Track and Field The track team has been busy competing in meets all around Tampa.  Tomorrow they travel to Steinbrenner High School for a big meet.

Crew Our crew team has been rowing all over the state this spring and will be in Tampa tomorrow for the FSRA West District regatta.  It starts at 8:00AM at the Harney Park Bypass.

Tennis Our tennis teams have finished their seasons.  Our boys team finished in a tie for 2nd in the district resulting in a tie-break match against Robinson to decide who advances to the regional.  Unfortunately we lost a 4-3 match to the Knights to end the season.

Boys Lacrosse Our boys’ lacrosse team ended their season on Tuesday in the district tournament as we fell to the district’s top team Plant.

Women’s Lacrosse Our women’s lacrosse team was playing in the district championship game last night at Plant and since this is being written on Thursday I don’t have the result yet.

As I’m sure you can see the spring is a very busy time for those of us in the Athletic department.  Hopefully you have been out to many of our events as it seems like we had something going on every day here for the last several months.  So much going on that I have had a hard time to keep everyone updated with this blog.  You’re now caught up on things.  Thanks to all of you that have volunteered to work the gate or concession stand at our games.  We couldn’t do it without you.  Also a great thanks to our assistant AD Benny Rodriguez.  We just couldn’t operate without the many hours he puts in to making TC athletics what it is today.  Remember we are all a part of developing Crusader Champions, on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.  GO TC!
