Scholar Athlete Awards

Every year at the graduation ceremony Tampa Catholic gives out 2 scholar athlete awards, one to a female and one to a male graduating senior who has performed on the athletic field as well as in the classroom.  With the success that many of our teams had this past year we have been blessed with many outstanding student/athletes.  Some of the criteria that is looked at for the award is that the student is in the top of the class academically.  This usually requires that the student has maintained a GPA over the 4 years of at least a 3.0.  They usually have taken either Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, and/or Honors classes.  On the field of play they have received all-state, all-county, and/or other distinguished awards.  This year we have 2 outstanding student/athletes that were awarded this honor.

Abby Zimroth was awarded the female scholar athlete award. Abby has a 4.06 cumulative GPA.  She is in several honor societies having taken Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, and Honors courses.  She was a 4-year letter winner, was selected as a Bright House athlete of the week, and was selected 1st team all-county.  She ended her career with over 1000 kills and 500 digs, unheard of amounts for a volleyball player.  She will be continuing her volleyball career playing for the University of Central Florida.  We couldn’t be prouder of her and the 4 years that she spent here at TC.

Thomas Dziagwa was awarded the male scholar athlete award.  Thomas has a 3.4 GPA.  He is a member of the social studies honor society having taken Advanced Placement and Honors courses.  He is a 4-year letter winner and was the first Tampa Catholic student to win Hillsborough County’s Alston ‘Mac’ McGahagin Award, an IMG_2403_thomas.jpgannual award given to a senior who displays great leadership, character, community service, academics, and playing ability.  Thomas was 3 times named to the coaches’ association all-county team, 2 times 1st team all-county, and 2 times 1st team all-state.  He broke the all-time TC scoring record for most career points, a record that has stood for over 30 years, as he scored 2162 points in his career, placing him 7th on the all-time Hillsborough County list.  He had over 20 D1 scholarship offers and will play next year in the Big12 conference for Oklahoma State University where he accepted a full 4-year scholarship.

As the Athletic Director I am extremely proud of all of our student/athletes and feel these 2 seniors represent all of them in the best way possible.  I also want everyone to know that since my son was one of the nominees I removed myself from the process of selecting the winner.  I would not trade my 4 years coaching my son for anything, and I have to admit that it has been much harder on him than it has been on me, but one thing I didn’t want anyone to think is that Thomas won the award because I was the AD.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  He and Abby both won because they are truly scholar athletes.

Spring Football

I know many of you were at last Friday’s spring football game and probably left as impressed as I was with the great job our coaches and players did. A 56-10 win over River Ridge gives us much to look forward to next season.  Next season will be a first for our football program as they will travel out of state to New Jersey to play Bergen Catholic, a team that traditionally is one of the top teams in the country.  It will be a great challenge for our team, but should prove to be a great experience for our coaches, players, and fans.

Physicals

Through the great work of our athletic trainer, Samantha Bachman, CORA Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine, and Orthopaedic Medical Group we are happy to announce that sports physicals will be offered Sat. June 4th for Tampa Catholic student/athletes.  The physicals will be given from 9:00-11:00 at the offices of Orthopaedic Medical Group located at 4541 S. Dale Mabry Hwy. Tampa 33611.  We encourage all of our students who plan of playing on any of our teams next year to take advantage of these physicals.  Cost is only $10. Bring all of the FHSAA paperwork with you and all that can be taken care of for the year in June.

Summer is almost here.  I’d like to welcome our new principal Bob Lees and wish the best of luck to our departing principal Tom Reidy.  May God be with them in their new positions.  I will be out of the office next week as my wife and I take Thomas to Oklahoma State.  I’m quite sure it will be an emotional time, especially for my wife, as she says goodbye to her baby.  GO TC!!
