EXCITEMENT

As I am now in my 3rd year serving as the Director of Athletics I continue to feel the energy and excitement from our coaches and student-athletes.  This is a great time of year and the Labor Day weekend seems to always signify the end of the summer and the beginning of fall and a new school year.  I know we have already been in session for several weeks and our fall teams have already started their seasons or are practicing with the anticipation of the start, but something about Labor Day that ends the summer.  I guess it goes back to my days growing up in West Virginia, where we didn’t start school until after Labor Day.

On Monday, Aug. 22 I met with all of our coaches.  They make me realize how much I love my job.  The excitement that they display about having the opportunity to work with young student-athletes makes me as a coach feel what a great profession I am in.  We are truly blessed to have so many fine coaches working here at Tampa Catholic.   They are all working very hard to meet the challenges of competing for championships and to build champions for life.  This year our coaches will all be a part of the Positive Coaching Alliance, a nationally recognized program for coaches that stresses the importance of developing the entire student-athlete.  Our coaches and I will be attending 3 workshops throughout the year to make us better coaches.   At the conclusion of our coaches meeting I left the group with a John Wooden, great UCLA basketball coach and some might say the greatest coach of all time, quote.  “Good coaches win games, great coaches change lives.”

Again I want to tell you how much of a difference your support makes for our program.  Your presence at our athletic events, volunteering to man the gate or work the concession stand, and your financial support are some of the things that make Tampa Catholic athletics state wide and even nationally known.

The weather this week is playing havoc with our schedule.  School was cancelled for Thursday and all of Thursday’s scheduled events were cancelled.  We have rescheduled the JV football game to Tuesday 9/6, and the volleyball game to 9/21.   Tonight’s football game against Admiral Farragut is still scheduled as of this writing.  We will do everything possible to play this weekend and have even discussed the possibility of playing on Monday.  It is important for our team to get a game under their belts before heading up to New Jersey to play powerhouse Bergen Catholic.  With that being said we also know that we don’t have any control of the weather and are at its mercy.

Be sure to check our website and athletic calendar to find out about all of the athletic events.  Mike Groff, our media specialist has done a great job with all of our social media outlets.  Be sure to follow Facebook and Twitter, as well as the website to keep up with your favorite teams.  If we get tomorrow’s game in tonight I hope to see all of you there.  You all are vitally important in helping us develop champions on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.  GO TC!!
